The techniques used for the beard transplant are:
In the Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) technique, a thin strip of scalp is removed and stripped into multiple individual follicular units.
In the Follicular unit extraction (FUE) technique, individual follicles are extracted using punches that are sized around 0.8mm-1mm, and are implanted directly into the beard area.
Clinics today primarily use the FUE method, as it leaves minimal to no scarring and ensures faster recovery.

Step One: Anaesthesia and preparation
- The scalp donor area and beard area are cleaned and sterilized.
- Local anaesthetic ensures complete numbness.

Technicians– Handle follicles under magnification.

Step Two: Donor hair extraction
- Using the FUE method, the surgeon carefully extracts individual follicular units from the donor zone, usually at the back of the scalp.
- Grafts are then stored in a nutrition field to maintain the viability of the grafts.
- The donor area field is left with minimal visible marks.
Step Three: Designing the beard
- The surgeon marks the desired beard pattern and determines the correct angulation, density, and natural growth of the hair.
- Artistry is key here as direction, depth, and distribution determine how realistic the final beard will appear.
Step Four: Creating the recipient’s site
- Microscopic incisions are made using fine blades and needles, following the natural direction of facial hair.
- Presentation at this stage ensures that transplanted hair grows at natural angles and densities
Step Five: Graft implantation
- Each follicle is gently implanted into the prepared slits
- Single hair grafts- For moustache and edges
- Double or triple hair grafts- For chin and jawline
Step Six: Final dressing and recovery
- Once all grafts are placed, the recipient site is cleaned and moisturised, and a light antibiotic ointment is applied
- A dressing is placed in the donor site, and the patient is monitored briefly before discharge
How long does a beard transplant procedure take?
- Full beard transplant: 6 to 8 hours
- Partial beard transplant ( moustache, side burns, etc): 2 to 4 hours
It’s typically performed as a day care procedure under local anaesthesia
Recovery and aftercare
Proper aftercare is essential for graft survival and optimal growth
First few days:
- Mild swelling or redness may occur
- Avoid touching, shaving, or washing the beard for 48 to 72 hours
- Sleep with the head elevated to reduce swelling
Two weeks:
- Tiny scabs form around the grafts that shed naturally.
- A temporary shedding phase, where the transplanted hair follicular grafts may fall out. This is a part of the healing process andis completely normal
One to Three Months:
- New hair begins to grow gradually
- The donor area shows signs of complete healing
Six-Nine Months:
- Noticeable beard growth with an increase in the thickness of the beard was noted.
- Hair can be shaped and trimmed at this stage.
Nine- Twelve Months:
- It takes 9-12 months for the final result to appear. Hair density, growth of the grafted follicles is now visible and indistinguishable from the original hair.

Complications
When performed by experienced surgeons in accredited facilities, beard transplants are extremely safe.
Possible but rare side effects include:

Beard transplant in post-cancer and post-traumatic cases

Here, in the pictures shown below, we have a patient who flew all the way from Canada to our hospital with a chief complaint of sparse hair over his beard region that he attributes to a traumatic injury in childhood.
A pre-operative evaluation of the hair density and texture was done along with the routine blood investigations and systemic evaluation for the procedure. After obtaining fitness for the procedure, he was taken up for a beard transplantation.
