3D Chin Contouring Surgery

3D chin contouring surgery, as the word says, is the change in the vertical height, horizontal length, and the width of the chin – all brought out at the same time, for life.

Who needs this?

It’s very true to say that a person with a strong chin has a strong personality. This so-called strong chin varies from race to race and from people to people. There is also a huge variation between the male and the female strong Chin.

When you have a chin that is not proportional to the face, then you are a good candidate for 3D chin contouring surgery. The chin could be over-projected, under-projected, asymmetrically projected, or a combination of these as well.

So if a person has a weak jawline and is concerned about the position of the chin, then you are a good candidate for this chin contouring procedure.

What are the steps once you are a good candidate for the 3D chin contouring Surgery?

After you consult Dr. Richardson at the hospital, you will need to take cone beam CT scans.

On these diagnostic scans, with the help of German software, the measurements are done on the chin and all the dimensions. Then, the precise tailor-made planning can be made based on the photographic analysis and the bony findings. Once that is done, a simulation could be performed on another software before the exact planning is going to get executed on the operating table for your 3D chin contouring surgery.

How is this different from more commonly performed chin augmentation?

Chin augmentation is most commonly performed by using fillers, which we call temporary chin augmentation. Chin augmentation is also performed by using foreign materials like silicone. It can further be achieved by means of bony work on the lower chin, such as a sliding genioplasty.

All the above types of chin augmentations usually work in one or two dimensions only. In contrast, 3D chin contouring surgery allows for a more precise, multi-dimensional approach. Non-bony methods also have the advantage of not being permanent for life, especially when temporary results are preferred.

How is 3D Chin Contouring Surgery Done?

At Richardson Face hospitals, this technique has been used for over two decades. Thousands of patients have benefited from all across the country and abroad have benefited from the same. After scanning, proper planning is done, and the amount of execution is calculated precisely.

Let’s take this case of male chin contouring surgery. To make the chin vertically taller, horizontally stronger, and broader, the osteotomy is planned well behind the mental nerve. Then the cut segment is both advanced and clockwise rotated so that the desired amount of planned advancement is achieved. At that point, the segment is fixed with German titanium plates and screws. Any protruding bone on the lateral aspect is sculpted, which is referred to as sculpting. Once this is done, the chin is stabilized with the plates and screws, ensuring precision in 3D chin contouring surgery.

What are the benefits of this over other techniques of chin augmentation?

It’s for life – permanent, and improves esthetics significantly as major movements can be done predictably.

  • The breathing of patient improves.
  • Sleeping also improves as the tongue is brought forward and downwards as well.
  • Cost-effective, as no need for any redos.

What are the risk factors or side effects?

  • Longer surgery and bony surgery, so recovery is longer. Up to 4 weeks at times.
  • A hospital stay is needed for a few days.
  • Greater skill and experience are needed.
  • State-of-the-art technology and saws are needed, apart from 3D software and planning; all are expensive.
  • Needs teamwork
  • Skill and experience of the surgeon are very, very important as nerves and vessels could get damaged otherwise.

What is the total cost for this procedure?

Cost varies a bit depending on the exact plan made for the patient. But it is between 1 lakh and 3 lakh Indian rupees at Richardsons Face Hospitals, Bangalore, India.

Does insurance cover this?

Usually NO, but in some cases, part of the procedure may get covered.

How long is the hospital stay?

Again, this varies, but can be from 1 day to 4 days. This is needed for IV antibiotics and pain medications.
